UA bio institute names director

Following a year-long nationwide search, the University of Arizona Institute of Biomedical Science and Biotechnology has named plant sciences professor Vicki Chandler to serve as its director. Chandler has served as interim director since May of last year.
"The institute will empower us to do 21st-century biology," Chandler told the Tucson Citizen. "Interdisciplinary, that's the mantra of the institute."
At various points in her career, Chandler has worked in the fields of genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and plant sciences. It was in this last field that she gained acclaim for her work with maize. She is both a Regents professor and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
IBSB is a virtual organization that promotes research collaboration among university faculty. The institute's founding director, Thomas Baldwin, retired from the position in July 2003.
